The Long Way Round

Sometimes, the best way to get somewhere is to not rush at all. The Long Way Round is a scenic drive that winds gently through Narrandera, Barellan and Grong Grong. It’s a loop of big skies, small towns and stories you won’t find by staying on the highway. Detour to discover murals and a delicious morning tea, linger a little longer by the water, and discover that the long way is, in fact, the best way.

Total Drive Time is approximately 2 hours (170km). Allow a half to full day because the urge to stop and sightsee will be irresistible. Big icons, tiny towns, picturesque creek bends and sky-high views mean there will be more than a few “pull over, I need a photo” moments.

Let’s roll!

Stop 1: Narrandera • Water Tower Art Trail

Start in the heart of Narrandera with the beautiful Water Tower Art. These towering murals feature richly layered imagery that reflects our beautiful natural environment, local history, and Wiradjuri culture.

Stop 2: Barellan • Big Racquets & Country Breakfasts

Fuel up at the much-loved Golden Grain Café (if your car also needs fuel, there is 24 hr fuel available in Barellan also). Think country hospitality and generous portions. If you’re rolling in a little later in the day, the Commercial Hotel Barellan is another excellent lunch stop option.

While you’re here, snap a pic with the Big Tennis Racquet, find the stunning Pink Cockatoo mural at Barellan Central School, and step inside the Barellan Museum for a beautifully curated collection of local history.

Stop 3: Ardlethan • Home of the Kelpie

Continue on to Ardlethan, proudly known as the ‘Home of the Kelpie’. Strike a post with the iconic Kelpie Statue, a tribute to one of Australia’s most hardworking companions. For the history buffs, the Ardlethan and Beyond Museum is well-worth a visit.

Stop 4: Grong Grong • Send a Postcard

Next, meander into Grong Grong. Dine at the community-owned Royal Hotel Grong Grong or, if you’re there on a weekday, duck into the Grongy General Store & Post Office for a quick coffee and to send a post-card to ensure your friends and family can be suitably envious of your adventures.

Don’t miss:

  • The seasonal produce, mudpie making station, and playground at the Grong Grong Earth Park

  • A photo with the ‘Grong Grong’ sign at the Railway

Stop 5: Five Mile Reserve • Bundidgerry Creek

Head down Grong Grong River Road to Five Mile Reserve, a quiet stretch along Bundidgerry Creek. It’s perfect for a picnic, a leg stretch, or a quick swim. If you brought your fishing rod, now’s your chance to whip it out.

Stop 6: Rocky Waterholes

On your way back towards Narrandera, detour to Rocky Waterholes.

Clear water, plentiful birdlife, and river red gums make it a favourite local swimming and kayaking spot (it’s definitely one of those places that feels like it should be a secret, even when it isn’t).

Stop 7: The Skywalk • Lake Talbot

As you head back to town, swing by the Narrandera Skywalk. Overlooking Lake Talbot, you can actually see Rocky Waterholes from here. The elevated platform offers sweeping views across the Flora & Fauna Reserve and it’s particularly magical at golden hour.

Stop 8: Final Stop • The Destination & Discovery Hub

Finish your loop at the Narrandera Destination and Discovery Hub. Tell our wonderful team all about your trip, pick up locally made souvenirs, and explore the new exhibit. It’s the perfect bookend to your day.
