Where to see the 2026 Lunar Eclipse: Narrandera NSW

Tomorrow night, 3 March 2026, the lunar eclipse will be visible across Australia but, if you want to see the blood moon at its best, head away from the city lights. Forecasts are currently suggesting cloud across parts of the Riverina, so we can’t promise a crystal-clear sky. But with low light-pollution, wide-open horizons, and some of the darkest skies in New South Wales, it’s worth a shot to try and catch a glimpse if you’re in town, particularly as it’ll be a few years before the next total eclipse.

2026 Lunar Eclipse Times (AEDT)

If you’re planning your evening, here’s when to look up:

  • Penumbral eclipse begins at ~7:44pm

  • Partial eclipse begins at ~8:50pm

  • Total eclipse begins at ~10pm

  • Maximum eclipse is at ~10:30pm

  • Total eclipse ends at ~11pm

You don’t need any special equipment to see a total lunar eclipse. It’s completely safe to view with the naked eye. Binoculars or a camera will help capture detail.

Best Places to Watch the Lunar Eclipse

When it comes to watching the night sky, light pollution makes a difference. In major cities, artificial light washes out the contrast in the night sky while tall buildings obstruct the view. With wide, uninterrupted horizons the Riverina offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in Australia (especially if the sky clears in time for the eclipse).

  • Narrandera Skywalk is elevated and open, overlooking Lake Talbot and the Flora and Fauna Reserve with expansive sky views. It’s located in town, which makes it easy to access, but there may be some light interference.

  • Stargazing Point on Ridgeview Road is located just out of town so there are no concerns regarding light pollution. Its higher elevation ensures an excellent view of the eclipse.

  • Five Mile Reserve offers a peaceful creek-side setting with minimal light pollution. Located just out of town, if conditions clear, reflections on the water could add something truly special to your eclipse photos. If you’d prefer to stick a little closer to town, Rocky Waterholes may offer the same opportunity but the tall river red gums of the Flora and Fauna Reserve may interfere with the view.

  • Barellan and Barellan Road offers long expanses of farmland away from any hint of light. If you chose this route, please make sure to be aware of other motorists. Pull completely off the road onto a safe, stable shoulder, avoid stopping on bends or crests, and don’t step out onto the road. Importantly, please respect fences and don’t trespass on private property.

Cloud Forecast: What to Expect

Current forecasts suggest cloudy conditions across parts of the Riverina. This doesn’t automatically mean you won’t see anything. Cloud cover often moves in bands and breaks. Even short clear periods during totality could reveal the blood moon. If you’re keen:

  • Choose locations with big, open sky views

  • Avoid heavily tree-covered spots

  • Stay flexible and monitor updated forecasts

A short drive within the Shire can sometimes make all the difference.

Make a Night of It

With no other total lunar eclipse until 2028/2029, this is a rare opportunity — cloud cover or not. Pack a blanket, bring a thermos, and step outside.
