Summer Tastes Better on the ‘Bidgee
If Narrandera had a summer love language, then this would be it: pick up fish and chips from The Popular Fish Shop, head down to one of our sandy river beaches, and settle in for an afternoon of chicken salt, sun, and sand.
It’s the kind of takeaway spot where the chips come hot, the portions are generous, and the vibe is pure old-school charm. A little retro, a little nostalgic, and very much loved, the Popular Fish Shop is a local go-to for good reason. Grab your order (extra chicken salt is basically mandatory) and you’re halfway to the perfect summer arvo.
Narrandera’s river beaches make it incredibly easy to slip into holiday mode. First, pick your beach, from First and Second Beach in the Flora and Fauna Reserve to beautiful Koori Beach near the historic Railway Bridge. Then, settle under a shady river red gum, spread out a beach towel, and let the river breeze work its magic.
In a world of grand plans and packed itineraries, sometimes the standout moment ends up being the simplest one. The Murrumbidgee is authentic and beautiful in a distinctly Australian way — sunlit water, soft sand, birdsong, and the occasional tinny drifting past. It’s calm, quiet, and made for slow, happy eating. Whether you’re with kids, on a road trip, or just carving out a moment for yourself, it feels like hitting pause on the outside world.
Our recommendation? Hot chips, sandy feet, and nowhere else you need to be.
Hot Tips for Even Hotter Chips:
When is The Popular Fish Shop is open? Tuesday to Sunday this summer at 73/75 East St, Narrandera NSW 2700.
Where are the beaches on the Murrumbidgee River? Check out First Beach, Second Beach, and Koori Beach. If you prefer calmer water, Rocky Waterholes is a popular choice. More sheltered, gentler for swimming, and a great alternative when the river is high.
What do I need to bring? Water, sunscreen, a towel or picnic blanket, a hat, and an esky if you’re planning a longer stay. Please take your rubbish with you to help keep these natural spots pristine.
Can I swim in the Murrumbidgee River? Yes — Narrandera’s beaches are popular swimming spots in summer. Always check conditions, supervise children closely, and swim to your comfort level as the river is unpatrolled.
Is the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve dog-friendly? Dogs are allowed in the Reserve, as long as they’re kept on-leash.
Where can I spot koalas? There are plenty of Koalas near our beaches. In summer, look in low-hanging branches — koalas will most likely be enjoying the shade and hoping for a cool breeze. If you’re very lucky, you may even spot a koala coming down for a drink from the river. Read our full guide here.
