MURRUMBIDGEE RIVER
On the edge of town the Murrumbidgee River is one of the most significant rivers in Australia. The Murrumbidgee River supports wildlife, including special plants and animals. The riverine environment includes strands of Black Cypress Pine, River Oak, and several threatened species. The River also supports endangered fish and other aquatic creatures including the Murray Crayfish, the Macquarie Perch and the Trout Cod.

The Murrumbidgee River is a great place for recreation and it has numerous river reserves ideal for water sports, fishing, canoeing, swimming, camping, picnics and riverside walks.

NARRANDERA WETLANDS
The wetlands are located just west of the Murrumbidgee River bridge off Shung Street.  The wetlands are fed by stormwater from the town and are designed to be perennial wetlands. A walking track surrounds the wetlands.

LAKE TALBOT
Lake Talbot itself is an artificial lake, located only 1.5 kilometres from the town centre, which is ideal for boating, canoeing, water skiing etc. The lake adjoins the Lake Talbot swimming complex and Lake Talbot Caravan Park.

Lake Talbot is the scene, from time to time, of the Australian and NSW skiing titles. Each January the NSW Water Ski Association holds the zone 5 championships on the lake which is especially suitable for water skiing. The trailing willows break the turbulence caused by boats and skiers.

RIVER CAMPING
Most people who camp on the river at the reserves, State Forest or on private property use tents and caravans. It should be remembered that permission needs to be sought from the property owner or manager before going on to private property.

Select a safe campsite away from towering gum trees to overcome the worry of a limb falling on someone, your car or your camp. Never set up your camp and tent on a beach because a wall of water may come down the river and wash you out.
Always set up your camp on high ground with your car facing the way out.
